Personality:

It's easy to peg Elaine as the helpless love interest, the obligatory damsel-in-distress when she first appears, but that couldn't be further from the truth and she would most likely punch you in the face for suggesting that. Elaine gets stuff done. While the rest of the Tri-Island Area might be made up of Pirates Who Don't Do Anything, Elaine is out there solving problems, keeping her husband out of trouble and beating down evil undead voodoo abominations like a boss. She is one of, if not the most competent person in the Caribbean. Granted, she doesn't really have that much competition for that title. At the same time, though, running the Tri-Island Area is a bit like herding cats. Lots and lots of smelly, drunken, lazy cats with bad attitudes. Safe to say, it's not a job for the weak-willed. She's tough and she's perfectly capable of taking care of herself. Where other pirates were too scared of the dread pirate LeChuck to even set sail from Melee Island, she merely regards him as a persistent annoyance despite his fearsome might and his attempts to win her hand by force.

To the public at large, Elaine exudes a cool, confident demeanor. She likes to give the impression right away that she is not someone to mess with, because pirates are filthy double-crossers who will screw you over the minute you let your guard down. Fortunately for her, she's not just posturing: Elaine really isn't someone you want to mess with. She is skilled with a variety of weapons (swords, guns, cannons, etc), a capable captain and a savvy politician. She's not above fighting and can hold her own against many foes, but most of the time it things don't come to blows because she can usually talk her way into or out of anything.

You see, one thing that puts Elaine above 90% of the Caribbean's population is that she's smart. She is all about cunning plans and outsmarting her enemies. She's good at thinking on the fly, something she's only gotten better at over the years since something always inevitably goes wrong, especially if Guybrush is involved. Her knack for plots and her Tough Pirate Lady persona allow her to step in and take charge of a situation very easily. In some cases sometimes nobody even notices what she's up to until the very end when it's revealed she was working behind the scenes to put things in her favor the entire time. See: her attempt at foiling LeChuck's plan to marry her in Secret (only failed because, well, Guybrush happened), and the entire over-arching plot of Tales.

She's also very level-headed and mature, more traits that seem to be missing from the pirate population of the Caribbean. Considering the goofy nature of the Monkey Island world, it's not surprising that sometimes her use of common sense backfires on her, such as in Escape when she thought exposing Charles L. Charles as LeChuck would win her the election... except she didn't count on her idiot citizens falling for his "Good Times, Free Grog" campaign. Most of the time, though, it doesn't end quite so catastrophically. She makes an excellent mediator, again due to her preference of trying to talk things out rather than resorting to violence. In Tales, she managed to keep the Vaycaylian chief and Captain McGillicutty from going at each others' throats through talks of peaceful negotiation. It didn't last, but she did buy Guybrush enough time to recover the artifacts needed to proceed on his adventure, and she came up with a strategy to stop the fight that broke out.

Elaine is certainly not without her flaws, though she makes an admirable effort trying to hide them. Her patience may seem infinite, considering who she's married to, but she does have buttons that can be pushed. She doesn't care much for showboating and pigheadedness, which devastated her when she found out that Guybrush was very much capable of being a pigheaded, showboating jerk to the point where she broke it off with him for a while and even wrote a book about it. Unsurprisingly, she hates LeChuck for the same reasons, though he's much worse and not to mention evil and trying to take over the Caribbean. Cross Elaine and you are going to have a hell of a time getting back on her good side. Hell hath no fury, woman scorned, etc, etc. At best she treats those she dislikes dismissively and with lots of sarcastic remarks. At worst she does all of that AND is insulting and mean AND will never let you forget what you did to make her mad. She may not be open about it in public (she has to keep up appearances, you know), but if she catches you in private, be prepared for the most thorough dressing-down you will ever receive in your entire life. She's almost like a different person when she's angry.

And then there's Guybrush. Guybrush is Elaine's wife husband and a big part of her life, for better or for worse. How did he land a catch like her? What does she see in him? Those... are excellent questions. At first she regarded him almost like a little brother of sorts, but as the years went by she realized that despite some of his worst flaws (and perhaps because of some of his others, like his charming ineptitude), she really, truly loved him. Their relationship hasn't always been smooth sailing (see above) but the two of them appear to be a perfect match for each other. He has the uncanny ability to bring out a softer, more romantic side in her that she rarely displays to anyone else. They seemed to be locked in an eternal contest to come up with the sappiest, most lovey-dovey, gushy nicknames for one another, there are constant references to snuggling, and he's the only one she breaks out the cute eyelash-batting for. Her soft side makes other appearances if you know where to look. She seems to have a thing for animals (especially dogs), all of her homes are luxurious mansions, and she's penned quite a few cheesy romance novels under a pseudonym.

At her heart, though, she is a pirate through-and-through. She's a more virtuous example, for sure, but she can still drink and fight and sail with the best of them. She was an excellent governor, but revealed that she hated being tied down in a position of power, and gave it up the moment she was able to so she could be free to sail the seas and go on adventures with her hubby by her side.
